What This Is

A single day that adds one clinic to what you are allowed to run. Being able to roll is not the same as being able to teach rolling, and this day is about the second one: breaking the roll into a progression, reading what is actually going wrong, and managing the expectations of people who will not get it on the first afternoon.

We schedule it the day before Instructor Weeks begins so you can drive up, do the day, and stay on for your instructor course. If you are coming for Level 1 Instructor and already hold Basic with teaching mileage behind you, this is one extra night away for one extra certification.

What Is Included

You camp on site with the group, the same as every Instructor Weeks course. Everything happens at Gillies Lake: classroom, launch, and camp are all within a short walk of each other.

  • Instruction and assessment by a Paddle Canada Instructor Trainer
  • Small group, six candidates per Instructor Trainer
  • Certification on meeting the criteria in the Paddle Canada manual

Not included

  • Paddle Canada instructor membership and course fee, paid directly to Paddle Canada before the course
  • Meals, kayak, and personal immersion gear. Rentals available, ask when you book
  • Travel to and from the Bruce Peninsula

What You Will Cover

  • Demonstration quality rolling, with time set aside for coaching your offside
  • Teaching progressions, and multiple solutions for the same common fault
  • Diagnosing physical causes such as lifting head first or tight hamstrings, and emotional ones such as fear and frustration
  • Equipment choices and teaching locations that set a participant up to succeed
  • Responding to a paddler who cannot exit a capsized kayak
  • Video analysis as a coaching tool, and where it stops being useful
  • Running a rolling clinic: sanctioning, reporting, liability, certification maintenance

Prerequisites

Minimum age 16. Current Paddle Canada membership, and provincial or territorial membership where required. Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Instructor certification. A minimum of two Basic Kayak Skills or higher courses taught within the past three years, as lead instructor on at least one. The ability to roll a kayak confidently, and ideally on both sides.

Assessment

Two teaching demonstrations, at least one on the water, plus a written test of about an hour and a course plan for a rolling clinic. The course plan may be finished afterwards, though certification is held until it is in.

Kayak Ontario

Certification. Successful candidates earn Paddle Canada Kayak Rolling Instructor, certified to conduct and certify Paddle Canada Kayak Rolling clinics.

Questions

I hold Level 1 Instructor. Do I still need Basic Kayak Instructor?
Yes. The prerequisite is Basic Kayak Instructor specifically, along with the teaching experience requirement. Level 1 Instructor does not substitute for it. If you are unsure where you stand, email us your certifications and we will check before you book.
Do I need to roll on both sides?
Not to enrol, but you need a reliable roll on at least one side. We set time aside during the day to coach your offside, because being able to demonstrate on both sides makes you a considerably better rolling coach.
Where do I stay?
On the course group site at Gillies Lake, included in your fee. Bring your own tent and sleeping gear. If you would rather have a roof, there are cabins and trailers at the same camp that you can book directly, and we will point you at them.
What if the course does not run?
Paddle Canada requires a minimum of two registered candidates and enforces it. If we do not reach two, you can either take a full refund or we can certify you through the mentorship route by assisting on rolling clinics through the season. Ask us and we will explain how that works.
