Paddle Canada - Basic Kayak Instructor
Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Instructor
The on ramp to the Paddle Canada instructor stream, taught on the Bruce Peninsula. Four days learning to break a stroke into its parts, put it back together, and hand it to someone who has never sat in a kayak.
Start Here
This is the entry point to the Paddle Canada instructor stream, and it is where we recommend almost everyone begins. Paddle Canada lists Basic Kayak Instructor as highly suggested before Level 1 Instructor, and expects Level 1 candidates to arrive having already taught Basic Skills courses. Starting here is the intended route, not a slower one.
There is a reason for that. Teaching a complete beginner is its own skill, separate from paddling well, and it is far easier to learn it on its own than to learn it while also being assessed on harder water. Instructors who skip this step tend to spend their Level 1 Instructor course discovering it.
You do not need to be heading for a career either. Plenty of candidates take this to run a camp waterfront, help at a club, or simply understand their own paddling better by having to explain it.
One Site, No Driving
The course runs at Gillies Lake on the Bruce Peninsula. Everything happens on site: classroom, launch, teaching sessions, and camp are all within a short walk of each other. No morning convoy, no shuttle, no hour of the day lost to loading boats and finding parking.
Sheltered water is also the right classroom for this course. Basic Kayak Skills is taught in calm, protected water with easy landings, so that is where you learn to teach it, and where you will be running your own courses.
What Is Included
You camp on site with the group for the duration of the course. Staying together is part of how the course works, and a good deal of the learning happens after the day on the water ends.
- Your place on the course group site, included in the fee
- Instruction and assessment by a Paddle Canada Instructor Trainer
- Small group, six candidates per Instructor Trainer
- Lifetime access to the course Learning Management System
- Pre-course readiness review and one-to-one call if needed
- Certification on meeting the criteria in the Paddle Canada manual
Not included
- Paddle Canada instructor membership and course fee, paid directly to Paddle Canada before the course
- Meals, kayak, and personal immersion gear. Rentals available, ask when you book
- Travel to and from the Bruce Peninsula
The Course Starts Before the Water
Four days is not enough time to lecture theory and still teach you to teach. So we move the theory off the water and into a Learning Management System that opens the day you register.
Why Four Days
Paddle Canada sets the minimum at twenty hours over two and a half days. We run four because we have run this course many times and the flow is simply better with the extra time.
Two and a half days is enough to get through the syllabus and assess you. Four means we can slow down where it matters, work through the things that will actually make you successful once you are running your own courses, and give you room to try something, have it not work, and try it again. You are here to learn to teach, not to be drilled through a checklist.
What to Expect
- Technical stroke refinement to demonstration quality
- Wet exits, assisted rescues, rafting, and responding to a paddler who cannot get out
- Lesson planning, teaching progressions, and correcting common errors
- Group management, site selection, and boundaries with novice paddlers
- Formal teaching sessions on land and on water, with structured feedback
- A written test and a course plan for a Basic Kayak Skills course
Skills, Coaching, and Inclusion
This is not a fitness test. You do not need to be an elite paddler to be an excellent Basic Instructor. You need to perform a stroke slowly and clearly enough that a beginner can copy it, and then explain it three different ways when the first two do not land.
Adaptive paddling and inclusive instruction are part of the syllabus, not an afterthought. Great instructors come in all shapes and sizes. Different bodies find different solutions to the same paddling problem, and understanding those variations is what makes you useful to a class of strangers.
Who It Is For
Camp waterfront staff, club volunteers, and recreational paddlers who want to introduce other people to the sport. If you already find yourself helping friends on the water, this is the certification that makes it official.
It is also the right course if you are new to teaching and not yet sure how far you want to take it. You will find out in four days, and nothing here is wasted if you go on to Level 1.
Prerequisites
Minimum age 16. Current Paddle Canada membership, and provincial or territorial membership where required. Paddle Canada Level 1 Sea Kayak Skills. No instructor certification or teaching experience required. Significant paddling experience in a variety of conditions and locations: you should be able to perform every Basic Kayak skill with confidence before day one.
Our Standards
Paddle Canada's minimum requirements are intentionally accessible. We add structure on top of them: pre-course work through the LMS, and a readiness call where it will help.
This is not gatekeeping. It is how we make sure nobody arrives on day one already behind, and that you leave able to run a course rather than merely holding a card.
Certification. Successful candidates earn Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Instructor, certified to conduct and certify Waterfront Kayak and Basic Kayak Skills courses, to assist a Level 1 Instructor on a Level 1 Sea Kayak Skills course, and to assist a Kayak Rolling Instructor on a rolling clinic.
