Level 2 Prep Course - Saugeen Peninsula

Level 2 Prep Course - Saugeen Peninsula

$825.00 CAD

Saugeen Peninsula — Lake Huron & Georgian Bay

Four days of Level 2 training with the pressure taken out. The full L2 skill set — strokes, rescues, towing, navigation, open-water judgment — coached at your pace, with no assessments and no camping.

On a certification course, the syllabus sets the pace. Here, you do. L2 Prep runs the same curriculum as our Level 2 courses as pure training: more repetitions, more coaching, more time on the skills that need it, zero time performing for an evaluator. We launch from different points across the peninsula each day, chosen by forecast — sheltered water when we're drilling, real conditions when you're ready to use them. Paddle all day, sleep in a bed.

What You'll Work On

The Level 2 curriculum, front to back. The difference from a certification course is time and pressure: every skill gets the repetitions it needs, and nobody is being evaluated.

Strokes & Boat Control in Conditions
Everything you built at Level 1, made to work in wind and waves. Efficiency when it's calm, control when it isn't.
  • Forward stroke efficiency for sustained open-water paddling
  • Edging and maneuvering in wind — turning upwind, downwind, and across
  • Bracing and sculling as reflexes, not techniques
  • Handling a loaded boat in textured water
Rescues & Recoveries
L2 rescues aren't new techniques — they're L1 rescues that still work when the water doesn't cooperate. Fast, smooth, repeatable.
  • Assisted rescues in wind and waves — speed, positioning, communication
  • Self-rescue that holds up outside the harbour
  • Contact and bow rescues for close-quarters recoveries
  • Rescue decision-making — which tool, when, and why
Towing & Incident Management
The skills that turn a paddler into a useful member of a group. When something goes wrong on open water, someone has to run the response.
  • Tow systems — contact tows, in-line tows, when each applies
  • Managing an incident as a group — roles, communication, priorities
  • Keeping a group together and moving in deteriorating conditions
Navigation & Trip Planning
Reading the forecast, planning the day, and knowing where you are — the judgment layer that sits underneath every open-water decision.
  • Marine forecasts — what the numbers mean on this coastline
  • Chart work and on-water position awareness
  • Planning a day paddle with real wind, real fetch, and real exits
  • Go / no-go decisions and building conservative margins
Open-Water Judgment
Two coastlines in four days. The peninsula gives us Lake Huron on one side and Georgian Bay on the other — we use whichever teaches best that day.
  • Launching and landing through small surf and dumping shorelines
  • Crossings — pacing, formation, and commitment decisions
  • Reading water: refraction, clapotis, and what the shoreline is telling you

Every Day Includes

  • Full-day coaching at 1:4 ratio
  • Published curriculum — the same syllabus our Level 2 courses run, delivered as training
  • Launch selection by forecast — sheltered water for drills, conditions when you're ready
  • Kayak Ontario learning platform access — Level 2 modules, before and after the course

Available to Add

  • Valley sea kayak + Nookie gear rental — no boat ownership required

Prerequisite: Paddle Canada or ORCKA Level 1 (or equivalent). L2 Prep assumes solid fundamentals — it builds on them, it doesn't teach them. Not sure? Get in touch.

Where this goes next: A Paddle Canada Level 2 certification course — Tobermory, 1000 Islands, Lake Superior, or Nova Scotia. You'll arrive with every skill already trained, and spend the course demonstrating rather than learning under evaluation.

Questions

Is this the same as a Level 2 course?
Same curriculum, different purpose. A Level 2 certification course has to cover the full syllabus, run assessments, and manage a backcountry trip — all in the same four days. L2 Prep drops the assessments and the camping and spends that time on coaching and repetition. You leave with the skills. Certification comes from the L2 course, where you'll perform at your best because nothing there is new.
Why not just go straight to Level 2?
Plenty of paddlers do, and it works. L2 Prep is for people who'd rather learn without being evaluated at the same time — or whose L1 is a few seasons old and wants rebuilding before it gets tested. Learning under assessment pressure is a real cost. This removes it.
Do I get anything toward certification?
No certification is issued — that's the point of the format. What you get is four days of documented training against the L2 syllabus and a coach's honest read on your readiness. Contact us to talk through your certification pathway.
Where exactly do we paddle?
Various launches across the Saugeen Peninsula, chosen each morning by forecast. The peninsula gives us two coastlines — Lake Huron and Georgian Bay — so there's almost always a lee shore for drills and an exposed shore for conditions. Meeting points are confirmed the evening before.
Is there camping?
No — this is a day-format course. You book your own accommodation on the peninsula (Lion's Head, Tobermory, and Wiarton all work) and meet us at the launch each morning. Paddle all day, sleep in a bed.
Do I need my own kayak?
No. Valley sea kayak and Nookie gear rentals are available.

We acknowledge that the Saugeen Peninsula is the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation — the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation. We are grateful for the knowledge shared with us by the Indigenous peoples of what is now known as Canada and the circumpolar region of the Northern Hemisphere.
