Nav L1 — Coastal Navigation Fundamentals

Navigate the way experienced paddlers do — chart and compass, no GPS required. An online, self-paced course that teaches you to plan routes, follow bearings, and always know where you are.

This isn't a lecture series. Every lesson is built around doing: measuring real distances on real charts, taking bearings, plotting courses, and solving the navigation problems you'll actually face on Georgian Bay, Lake Superior, or wherever you paddle. When your battery dies or your screen washes out in the sun, this is the skill set that's still working.

What You'll Learn

Five skill areas, built in sequence. Each one is practiced with interactive exercises and scenarios set on Ontario waters — the 30,000 Islands, the Saugeen Peninsula, Lake Superior.

Chart Reading
The chart is the foundation of everything else. Learn to read it the way you'd read a road map — fluently, at a glance.
  • Decode chart symbols — rocks, shoals, lights, and buoys
  • Understand scale and measure real distances
  • Find the right chart for your paddling area
Compass Skills
A compass only helps if you trust it — and you only trust it once you understand it.
  • How marine compasses work, and why they differ from hiking compasses
  • True north vs. magnetic north — and why it matters in Ontario
  • Take a bearing from a chart and follow it on the water
  • Plot courses with a Douglas Protractor
Piloting Techniques
Most coastal navigation isn't math — it's technique. These are the habits that keep you found without ever taking your hands off the paddle.
  • Hand-railing — navigating along shorelines and features
  • Backstops — knowing when you've gone too far
  • Aiming off — the trick to finding narrow channels
  • Checkpoints and waypoints for tracking progress
Time, Speed & Distance
One formula, endless uses. Time is the navigation instrument you always have with you.
  • The 60 D=ST formula — navigation math made simple
  • Realistic group speeds for trip planning
  • Using time as a navigation tool
Trip Planning
Navigation starts at the kitchen table. A well-planned trip needs very little navigating; a poorly planned one needs rescuing.
  • Alpha vs. beta knowledge — research vs. real-time decisions
  • Float plans that actually help SAR find you
  • Building a passage plan with legs, times, and contingencies

Questions

Who is this course for?
Any paddler who wants to answer "where am I?" and "how do I get there?" without a screen. It's especially useful if you paddle island-rich areas like the 30,000 Islands, or you're preparing for Paddle Canada Level 2 — navigation is a core part of that curriculum, and arriving with it already solid changes the course.
Is an online course enough to learn navigation?
For the fundamentals — yes. Chart reading, bearings, and planning are desk skills first; the water is where you apply them. This course builds the foundation, and our on-water Navigation Clinic is where it gets tested against a real coastline, real wind, and a moving kayak.
Do I need to buy charts or a compass?
No. All exercises use chart excerpts and tools built into the lessons. When you're ready to buy the real thing, the course tells you exactly what to look for.
How long do I have to finish?
There's no deadline — work through it at your own pace and revisit lessons whenever you need a refresher.
