This isn't a lecture series. Every lesson is built around doing: measuring real distances on real charts, taking bearings, plotting courses, and solving the navigation problems you'll actually face on Georgian Bay, Lake Superior, or wherever you paddle. When your battery dies or your screen washes out in the sun, this is the skill set that's still working.

What You'll Learn

Five skill areas, built in sequence. Each one is practiced with interactive exercises and scenarios set on Ontario waters: the 30,000 Islands, the Saugeen Peninsula, Lake Superior.

Chart Reading
The chart is the foundation of everything else. Learn to read it the way you'd read a road map, fluently and at a glance.

Compass Skills
A compass only helps if you trust it, and you only trust it once you understand it.

Piloting Techniques

No prerequisites, no equipment. Everything you need is built into the course. If you want to practice with physical charts and tools afterward, we'll point you in the right direction.

Take it to the water: Kayak Navigation: Charts, Tides, and Safety is four days at our Ferndale shop and on the Tobermory coast. Nav L1 is included with registration.

Keep going online: Navigation Level 2: Chart Work and Drift and Navigation Level 3: Crossings and Level 3 Prep both run in the off-season, with live Saturday sessions.

Questions

Who is this course for?
Any paddler who wants to answer "where am I?" and "how do I get there?" without a screen. It's especially useful if you paddle island-rich areas like the 30,000 Islands, or you're preparing for Paddle Canada Level 2. Navigation is a core part of that curriculum, and arriving with it already solid changes the course.
Is an online course enough to learn navigation?
For the fundamentals, yes. Chart reading, bearings, and planning are desk skills first; the water is where you apply them. When you're ready, Kayak Navigation: Charts, Tides, and Safety tests them against a real coastline, real wind, and a moving kayak.
Do I need to buy charts or a compass?
No. All exercises use chart excerpts and tools built into the lessons. When you're ready to buy the real thing, the course tells you exactly what to look for.
How long do I have to finish?
There's no deadline. Work through it at your own pace and revisit lessons whenever you need a refresher.
