Introduction to Sea Kayaking in Current

$349.00 CAD

Niagara River — Fort Erie

The Mighty Niagara is a challenging and misunderstood place to paddle a sea kayak. This program uses the river as the venue to teach current skills in a supportive, inclusive training environment. We operate on Niagara Parks properties under permit, which allows us access to teach on this unique classroom.

Day one starts with a short skills review, then gets you into gentle current the same morning — launching, landing, ferrying, and your first deliberate eddy lines. Day two is where our method shows: we eddy-hop up the river, so the water gets progressively harder as your skills sharpen. You earn each feature on the way to the next one — you're never dropped into the biggest current first and left to survive your way down.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Review & Gentle Current
A short review to confirm the baseline, then into the river the same day — friendly current, deliberate skills.
  • Safety debrief and risk management presentation
  • Level 1 review and re-entries — confirming the foundation
  • Launching and landing in current
  • First ferries — angle, speed, and reading the water
  • Peeling in and out on gentle eddy lines
Day 2 — Progressive Current, Working Upstream
We eddy-hop up the river, so every move earns the next one and the challenge builds with your skills — not against them.
  • Eddy-hopping upstream — linking eddies with intent
  • Ferrying in stronger flow
  • S-turns — linking moves across current
  • Peeling in and out on faster eddy lines
  • Bringing it home — a controlled run back down through everything you climbed

Where this goes next: The Sea Kayak Current and Surfing Clinic — Montreal. Standing waves on the St. Lawrence and rep after rep on the same feature — the venue where moving through current becomes playing in it. The natural sequence is this clinic one season, Montreal the next. Current skills also open up river-influenced coastal environments — pair with Surf & Dynamic Conditions at Tobermory or Introduction to Surfing and Forecasting the Great Lakes for the full dynamic water progression.

Questions

Do I need my own kayak?
No. Fibreglass sea kayaks are available for rent. You're welcome to bring your own if it meets the two-bulkhead requirement.
Do I need a drysuit?
Strongly recommended for the Niagara. Drysuits are available for rent if you don't own one.
How strong is the current?
We work upstream, eddy-hopping so the river gets progressively harder as your skills build — not easier. You're never dropped into the biggest water first. The Niagara has a range of features, and your coach manages the exposure so you're challenged but not overwhelmed.
Is this a whitewater course?
No. This is sea kayak current training — you're in a sea kayak on moving water, learning to read and work with current. Different boat, different techniques, different risk profile than whitewater kayaking.
What's the next step after this clinic?
The Sea Kayak Current and Surfing Clinic in Montreal. The Niagara teaches you to move through current; the St. Lawrence teaches you to play in it — standing waves and rep after rep on the same feature until it's automatic. The natural sequence is this clinic one season, Montreal the next.
Can this count toward Level 2?
The skills developed here are directly relevant to Level 2 requirements. Contact us to discuss your certification pathway.
Are you permitted to run courses on the Niagara River?
Yes. We operate on Niagara Parks properties under permit. The Niagara is a regulated stretch of river, and operating here requires authorization — if you're booking current training anywhere on the Niagara, confirm your outfitter holds a valid Niagara Parks permit.
Niagara Parks Special Occasions Permit #2026-003
Why does the permit matter to me as a participant?
Because it's the visible end of a chain that protects you. A permit means the instruction is declared — to the land manager and to the insurer standing behind it. If a coached day is presented as "just a group of friends paddling" should anyone ask, that isn't a clever workaround; it usually means the day isn't declared to anyone, including the insurance that's supposed to cover you if something goes wrong. Wherever you train, ask two questions: who authorized this, and whose insurance covers me on the water? A professional program answers both in writing. Ours are at the top of this page and in your registration confirmation.

We acknowledge that the land on which we gather (known as Fort Erie) is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Attiwonderonk, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and Mississauga. We are grateful for the knowledge shared with us by the Indigenous peoples of what is now known as Canada as well as the circumpolar region of the Northern Hemisphere.
