Cape Breton's coastline is dramatic, wildlife-rich, and technically demanding: seals, seabirds, tide-driven currents, and exposure that rewards good seamanship. This four-day base camp expedition develops coastal skills and the expedition mindset needed for independent multi-day paddling, with a warm cabin to return to each evening.

Daily paddles are paired with land-based workshops on tides, weather, navigation, and trip planning. You'll paddle more purposefully and think more clearly about the water you're moving through by the time you leave.

Itinerary

Daily focus may shift based on conditions and group progress, and that responsiveness is part of the experience.

Day 0: Arrival
Pre-expedition briefing, group introductions, and gear check.
Days 1 to 3: Cape Breton Coast
Daily coastal paddles with on-water coaching. Land-based workshops on tides, weather, and trip planning. Optional night paddle weather permitting.
Day 4: Final Paddle
Applied skills and leadership focus. Closing debrief. Afternoon departure.

What to Bring

  • Sea kayak, paddle, PFD, and safety gear: bring your own, or rent from us and select at checkout
  • Transportation to and from the site, participants arrange their own
  • Personal paddling layers: dry suit, neoprene, or paddle jacket as appropriate
  • All food and snacks: this trip is not catered, so bring all your own meals and plenty of snacks, more than enough to stay fuelled and happy across four active days on the water
  • Any accommodation before or after the expedition, arrange your own

Good to Know

  • The expedition is based out of Hideaway Campground in Ingonish, Cape Breton. If you'd like to arrange camping on-site, contact Hideaway directly. We're guests on their property and they'll sort you out.
  • Base camp format: daily paddles, evenings at the campground. This is not a backcountry camping expedition.
  • Cape Breton's tidal and coastal conditions vary significantly. Daily plans adapt to weather and conditions, and that is part of what you'll learn.
  • Seals, seabirds, and occasional whale sightings are part of paddling this coastline. No guarantees, but it happens.
  • Rentals available: sea kayak, dry suit, and paddling kit. Select your rentals at checkout.

Prerequisite: Kayak Ontario Level 1 minimum, Level 2 recommended. An equivalent Paddle Canada or ORCKA sea kayak Level 1 also qualifies. You should be comfortable with wet exits, basic re-entries, and a full day on the water. Not sure if you're ready? Get in touch and we'll help you assess.

Questions

Is camping involved?
The expedition runs out of Hideaway Campground in Ingonish. You paddle each day and return to the campground each evening. If you'd like to camp on-site, contact Hideaway directly to arrange your own site. This is not a backcountry camping expedition. If that's what you're after, see our Philip Edward Island or Lake Superior expeditions.
Do I need my own kayak and gear?
This trip is not outfitted, so bring your own sea kayak, paddle, PFD, and safety gear, or rent from us and select your rentals at checkout. Personal paddling layers are also your own. Plan to arrive with everything you need or arrange rentals ahead of time.
What if the weather is bad?
Cape Breton's weather is part of the experience. We adapt daily plans to conditions. Some days that means adjusting the route, some days it means a land-based workshop instead. We only cancel paddles for genuine safety concerns.
I've only done my Level 1. Am I ready?
Kayak Ontario Level 1 meets the minimum. Cape Breton is a tidal, exposed coastal environment, more demanding than most Level 1 training venues. Level 2 is recommended for a reason. Not sure where you stand? Email us and we'll give you an honest assessment.
Can I earn a certification on this expedition?
Yes. This expedition suits the KT1 level of the ORCKA Kayak Tripping and Guiding program. Pair it with the KT1 online module to be assessed and certify. Prefer just the paddling? The trip stands on its own with no assessment. See the pathway below.
