FAQ

Can I do the expedition separately?
Yes. The online theory and the expedition are separate purchases. You can complete them in either order. Both are required for full KT2 certification.
Which expedition should I choose?
It depends on what environment you want to lead in. The Slate Islands and Pukaskwa are big freshwater — open crossings, dynamic weather, remote coastline. The 100 Wild Islands is tidal ocean — currents, fog, Atlantic swell. Choose based on where you want your leadership tested.
Can I take the module without doing an expedition?
Yes. The theory knowledge stands on its own for professional development. You won't earn the KT2 certification without the field component, but the learning is valuable regardless.
Is there a deadline to complete the module?
No. Work at your own pace. The module stays open in your dashboard.
What's the difference between KT1 and KT2?
KT1 covers expedition fundamentals — navigation, camp craft, trip planning, and group participation. KT2 is leadership and guiding: you're responsible for others, making route decisions, managing risk, and running the expedition. KT1 is required before KT2.
What happens after KT2?
KT2 graduates can enroll in the ORCKA Online Trip Leader Module to lead overnight kayak trips, apply for personal guiding insurance, assist or co-lead instructional expeditions, and work toward ORCKA Instructor status.

Certification Pathway

KT2 certification signals readiness to operate independently as a coastal leader or guide on overnight expeditions. Graduates meet the standards required for personal guiding insurance through ORCKA's recognized pathway.

After KT2, you can:

Enroll in the ORCKA Online Trip Leader Module to lead overnight trips at your certification level. Apply for personal guiding insurance. Assist or co-lead instructional expeditions. Work toward ORCKA Instructor status.

ORCKA's modular structure provides progressive leadership pathways — CK-level paddlers can lead day trips, KT-level paddlers can lead overnight trips, and KT3 has leadership and guiding built in as the pinnacle of the Kayak Tripping pathway.
