Kayak Tripping Level 1 - Learn to Kayak Trip
The online theory component of the ORCKA Kayak Tripping Level 1 certification. Trip planning, route design, risk assessment, weather interpretation, campsite logistics, and the fundamentals of multi-day coastal travel — completed at your own pace before you head out on the water.
This module covers the knowledge side. To earn your full KT1 certification, you'll also need to complete an instructional expedition separately — any of our eligible expeditions will qualify as the field component.
What You'll Learn
- Trip planning, route design, and daily decision-making
- Weather interpretation and applying forecasts to real conditions
- Risk awareness, hazard identification, and on-trip mitigation
- Campsite selection, setup, and backcountry logistics
- Efficient packing, group organization, and teamwork
- Low-impact coastal travel and environmental practices
- Kitchen systems, food planning, and managing multi-day travel
Who It's For
- Paddlers preparing for their first multi-day coastal trip
- Paddlers entering the ORCKA Kayak Tripping and Guiding pathway
- Anyone who wants the planning and risk management knowledge before heading into the backcountry
How Certification Works
The ORCKA Kayak Tripping Level 1 certification has two components. The rules are simple, and they matter:
- Two parts, one certification. Complete this online theory module and one eligible instructional expedition. When both are done, you've earned your KT1.
- Either order. Take the module before your expedition or after — there's no required sequence between the two components, and no deadline.
- One expedition, one certification. Each certification level requires its own dedicated expedition. A single trip cannot count toward both KT1 and KT2 — if you're pursuing both, you'll complete two separate expeditions.
- One level at a time. Certifications are earned sequentially. KT1 must be complete before KT2.
- Both parts stand on their own. The module is complete learning by itself, and every expedition is a full experience without the theory. Certification only requires pairing them.
