Skill Building Series

Build Your Paddling. Your Way.

Skills clinics from half-day fundamentals to multi-day deep dives. Take one. Take them all. No set order. No wasted weekends. The name may not be inspiring, but the clinics are!

You finished your Level 1 or Level 2. Now what? You want to keep building — but not with expensive, locked-in programs. Pick the skills you want to work on, book the sessions that fit your schedule, and get top-level coaching at a 1:4 instructor ratio with high-quality kayaks and gear available if you need them. Each clinic stands on its own, but they're designed to complement each other — the more you take, the faster everything connects.

Done your L1 and not ready to commit to a full Level 2? Done your L2 and not sure what's next? Not quite ready for L3? This is what goes in between.

The gap nobody talks about

Most paddling courses end with a certificate and a friendly see you next time. Then you're on your own. You know your forward stroke could be more efficient. You're not confident in rough water. Your rescues work in a pool, but you've never tested them when it matters. Solo practice without feedback just reinforces habits — good and bad. Skill development doesn't happen in a single weekend. It happens over a season, with coaching, practice, feedback, and progressively challenging conditions. Some affordable options that can also be used to create a full progression.

Two formats. One goal.

Half-day sessions to sharpen fundamentals. Multi-day clinics to push into new coastal environments and skills. All are open to anyone with a Level 1.

Sharpen the Fundamentals
Build your L1 foundation skills — think of it as a review and a push forward of your existing skill set. Pick any clinic in any order — take them based on what you need.
4 hours1:6 ratioSheltered waterBoat & gear rentals available
Stroke Efficiency
Forward stroke mechanics, power transfer, torso rotation, cadence. The single biggest improvement most paddlers can make — and the one most courses rush past.
Bracing & Edging
Low and high brace, edge control, linking turns with commitment. Build the reflexes that keep you upright when conditions get interesting.
Boat Control & Maneuvering
Sweep strokes, draw strokes, bow rudders, stern rudders, pivot turns. Precise boat placement in tight quarters and moving situations.
Rescues
Self-rescue, assisted rescue (T-rescue, scoop), re-entry techniques. You learned these in your L1 — now make them reliable under pressure through coached repetition.

Foundation Reset
Refine everything from your L1 with expert coaching — stroke efficiency, boat control, bracing, and rescues at a higher standard. Not just enough to pass, enough to paddle well.
Lion's Head Sheltered
Navigation Series
A two-weekend series at Tobermory. Navigator builds the skills — chart work, compass, environmental reading. Explorer tests them under pressure — longer crossings, incident management, and decisions that matter.
Tobermory 2 × 2 days Moderate → Moderate+ + Learning Platform
Surf & Dynamic Conditions
Wind waves, reflected seas, clapotis, rock gardens, and surf zones. The highest-energy Georgian Bay environment — where boat control and bracing stop being drills.
Tobermory Moderate+
Introduction to Sea Kayaking in Current
Day one rebuilds flatwater skills and rescues. Day two puts it all in the Niagara River — ferrying, s-turns, peeling in and out. A completely different skill set from coastal paddling.
Niagara Peninsula Moderate+
Surfing & Forecasting the Great Lakes
One evening of wave forecasting, two full days in the surf. Learn to read conditions, pick the break, and paddle into real Great Lakes waves.

Built for paddlers who want to keep getting better

Half-Day Clinics

Ideal if you're fresh off your L1 and want more reps on the fundamentals with real coaching feedback. Low commitment, focused outcome. Take one, or take all four.

Weekend Clinics

For paddlers ready to push into new environments and more complex skills — navigation, open-water rescues, currents, surf. Both post-L1 and post-L2 paddlers benefit in the same session with different tasking.

Prerequisite:

Paddle Canada or ORCKA Level 1 sea kayak skills (or equivalent experience). Not sure if you're ready? Get in touch — we'll point you in the right direction.

Frequently asked

Do I need my own kayak?
No. Valley sea kayak and Nookie Drysuit rentals are available with every clinic.
Do I have to take the clinics in order?
No. Every clinic stands alone. That said, the weekend clinics layer naturally — Foundation Reset before Navigation, Navigation before Surf & Dynamic — and your coaches can suggest a sequence if you want guidance.
Can these clinics be used to clear L2 conditions?
Yes — select clinics can be used to clear outstanding Paddle Canada Level 2 conditions. Contact us to discuss your specific situation and we'll identify which clinics apply.
Will I get certified?
These clinics focus on skill development, not certification. But they're the best preparation for certification courses that exists. When your coaches think you're ready for Level 2 or Level 3, they'll tell you — and your development record makes that transition seamless.
I did my Level 2 a while ago. Are the half-day clinics too basic?
The half-day clinics focus on L1 fundamentals — but "fundamentals" coached at a high level is different from what you got in your L1 course. Stroke efficiency alone is worth revisiting. That said, the weekend clinics are probably where you'll find the most challenge, especially Current Skills and Surf & Dynamic.
What's the Coastal Development Program?
A structured season bundle that includes Foundation Reset and the full Navigation Series as your base, with à la carte add-ons for Current Skills, Surf & Dynamic, and Surfing & Forecasting. You save 15%, get guaranteed spots, and your coaches track your development across the entire program.
Can I pair a weekend clinic with a Coastal Explorer day?
Yes — select weekend clinics can be extended with a Coastal Explorer touring day at the same venue. More water time in the environment you're training in, plus the reward of exploring beautiful coastline. Available dates released with the season schedule.
Is there a payment plan?
Yes. A 25% deposit option is available for the Coastal Development Program — email us for details.
Is camping available?
Camping is available at Tobermory sessions. Email us for details and we'll help you sort logistics.
What's the Kayak Ontario learning platform?
Our online learning system with structured modules covering navigation theory, weather interpretation, risk management, and route planning. Access is included with the Navigation Series — it extends your learning far beyond the clinic days.
What's the difference between this and a traditional course?
Traditional courses give you 2 days with an instructor who just met you. Our clinics are coached from a published curriculum at a 1:4 ratio. Take multiple clinics and your coaches know your development history — what's clicking, what needs work, and what to push next.
