Tripping and guiding is about judgment, preparation, and moving through real environments with intention, not just paddling skills. The ORCKA Kayak Tripping and Guiding program takes you from your first loaded overnight to a certified trip leader, one level at a time.
Each level meets national standards while emphasizing practical decision-making, leadership, and self-sufficiency on multi-day expeditions. You build toward greater independence on the water: trip planning and logistics, risk assessment and group management, navigation, weather, and environmental awareness, and living, travelling, and making decisions from a loaded kayak.
Run by qualified ORCKA instructors, these courses develop real tripping competence, not just checklist completion.
How a certification works
Every level has two halves. The online module covers the theory, planning, and preparation. The on-water expedition is where you are assessed and put it to work. Complete both at a level and you earn that certification.
Prefer just the paddling? You can join any expedition purely to tour, with no assessment and nothing to pass. Browse expeditions. The trips still build the logged experience the higher levels ask for, so nothing is wasted if you decide to certify later.
The pathway
Three tripping levels, each an online module paired with a qualifying expedition. KT3 opens the instructor and guiding pathway beyond.

KT1 · Introduction to Kayak Tripping
For: paddlers with little or no tripping experience, ready for their first loaded overnights.
Prerequisite: Kayak Ontario Level 1, or ORCKA Flatwater Kayaking, or comparable skills. No logged distance required.
On the water: winds to about 10 knots, waves to roughly half a metre, travel up to 3 km from shore. Minimum two-night trip.
After KT1: function confidently as a member of a trip, and plan small trips in sheltered water.

KT2 · Intermediate Kayak Tripping
For: paddlers with tripping experience who want to travel further offshore and start sharing the load of leading.
Prerequisite: KT1, at least 17 years old, plus logged tripping experience: 500 km, 25 nights, six trips where you shared organizing and leading, and one near-wilderness trip of five days or more. VHF radio licence and wilderness first aid recommended.
On the water: winds to about 15 knots, waves to roughly 0.8 metres, travel up to 4 km from shore. Minimum three-night trip.
After KT2: plan and take part in single and multi-day trips in offshore conditions.

KT3 · Advanced Skills and Trip Leadership, the capstone COMING SOON
For: trippers ready to cross from skilled participant to trip leader, organizing, leading, and guiding multi-day expeditions.
Prerequisite: KT2, at least 17 years old, plus logged tripping experience: 500 km, 25 nights, six trips where you shared organizing and leading, and one near-wilderness trip of five days or more. VHF radio licence and wilderness first aid recommended.
On the water: winds to about 20 knots, waves to a metre or more, up to roughly two metres, travel five or more km from shore. Minimum four-night trip. The logbook carries over from KT2; what changes is the responsibility and the conditions you lead in.
After KT3: you hold an ORCKA trip leader designation, qualified to plan, lead, and guide multi-day expeditions of your own. This is the credential the whole pathway builds toward, and it opens the instructor route.
Beyond KT3 · Teaching and guiding
KT3 holders can go on to ORCKA Kayak Tripping Instructor certifications, KTI1 and KTI2, to train and certify other paddlers, and ultimately to Instructor Trainer status. These are separate instructor-level courses with their own prerequisites.

How the expeditions build your logbook
The logged experience for KT2 and above looks steep on paper. It comes together faster than you would think once you are on the water with us.
For example. One Lake Superior expedition logs roughly 60 to 100 km over five to eight nights, and it counts as a near-wilderness trip of five days or more. That single trip clears the wilderness-trip requirement outright and takes a real bite out of the distance and nights KT2 asks for. A few more across a season or two and the rest falls into place. Each expedition page shows which levels that trip counts toward.
Close but not certain you qualify? The requirements allow for comparable experience at the Course Director's discretion. If you are near the mark, get in touch and we will help you work out where to start.
